Chiura Obata

Chiura Obata was born in Sendai. He was very fond of painting and had artistic mind. Chiura Obata adopted this profession by his uncle, who was a fabulous artist.

In childhood he was skilled in ink painting. He made many paintings with the help of different colors of ink. And when Chiura Obata came at an age of 14 years, he was decided to trained professionally and he get classes to the painter Murata Tanryo who was in Tokyo.

Later on, in 1903, Chiura Obata decided to come up to California and to reside there. Distant from his mother country, his trouble was to get in touch with the Japanese art scene and keep in contact with galleries in Japan.

He gets his living in California. Chiura Obata works here for special newspapers and also as a commercial designer. For the duration of this era his most wanted subjects were Californian mountain landscapes, this is his favorite subject.

Chiura Obata used the watercolors and from these water based colors he made a woodblock prints. Mostly the artist favored glowing and shining colors. Backgrounds are frequently illustrated with dramatic skies accomplish with strong bold light and color special effects.

In 1932 Obata Chiura goes back to the United State. Here he had expected a job as an art instructor. He performed his duty as an art teacher at the well-known University of California.

At last, Chiura Obata expired at the age of 90. Many art galleries held the exhibitions of his paintings. In San Francisco the Young Memorial Museum held a trade fair of his ink paintings, brush paintings, as well as color woodblock prints.
