Humberto Acosta constructs a story where, besides the history of lefty Sandy Koufax, provides an overview of modern baseball, which include the likes of Luis Aparicio, AndrĂ©s “El Gato” Galarraga and Roberto Clemente.
Sandy Koufax, lefty gold of the Dodgers, was the soul of the team to win two games and earn the MVP award of the Series, becoming the first to receive the distinction twice.
Koufax had won 26 games in the regular season, but did not open the first game because that day, October 6, coincided with the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur and lefty asked the manager Walter Alston to respect their belief.
Koufax opened the second game at Metropolitan Stadium in Minnesota, but the win went to another lefty, Jim Kaat, who also drove in two runs and the Twins prevailed 5-1.
For the second time Kaat and Koufax faced, but this time luck smiled at Los Angeles, who threw a 7-0 shutout and ten strikeouts, and his teammates backed him with 14 hits, four to the account of Maury Wills.
But again Koufax was erected insurmountable barrier to rival sluggers, working nine innings immaculate, with a dozen strikeouts, while Johnson homered for the first of two runs that scored the Dodgers.
